What a year! 2021 was something else.. But right now we are at the start of a new year. A time where it may be easier to feel optimistic. Maybe you’ve even made some New Year’s Resolutions. It starts off so fun, when you get to try a new way of living and you can just feel the changes happening. Unfortunately, the science shows that most people drop those changes within the first month.
It’s not easy to change your life. But bringing balance back to your life is essential if you want to live a meaningful and fulfilling life. If you want to change your life, you need to go beyond New Year’s Resolutions. You need to adopt a new way of living. And that doesn’t have to be as scary as it may seem.
Set Better Goals
As you start your journey to bring balance back into your life, you should begin by setting your goals. These goals shouldn’t be about what you want to change so much as they should be about what you want to do when you have accomplished them. You may want to lose weight or get better sleep, but those are only the things you desire to change, not the reason you want to change them. Maybe you want to lose weight so you can spend time outdoors with your family and feel more comfortable doing it. Maybe you want to get better sleep so you can focus on the time you have with your family instead of feeling worn out all the time. Whatever your reason for wanting to change, it’s easier to change when you have a bigger reason to hold on to.
Make Actual Changes
Far too often, when we try to do something new, we fall into one of two extremes. We make massive changes which we will never live up to. Or me make small changes that are totally meaningless. What we really need to focus on is making changes that are real, but accessible. Instead of aiming to go to the gym every day, start by going for a short walk around your neighborhood. And it will work even better if you incorporate these changes into your current routines. For example, if you pick up your mail when you drive by your mailbox, you could change to picking up your mail after you go for a walk in the evening. Changes that are part of your routine will be easier to maintain and will give you a better opportunity to succeed.
Get Help
One of the biggest problems I see when patients and friends have tried to make massive changes in their lives, is the tendency to fall into depression. It is hard to make changes that impact your life so severely. But when you need to make changes, and you are dedicated to making those changes, you can’t run away from the challenges you are facing. But you don’t have to face those challenges alone. Sometimes depression has a physical component that you can get help in dealing with. Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine offer some fantastic solutions for facing these difficulties. Other times you may need to see a Western Doctor. But whatever you do, make sure you get the help you need.
